Spring is natures way of saying,
 'Let's Party'!

A new resident is hanging out in the pond this spring. When I disturb the water, he hops out of nowhere headed for cover. Otis wasted a morning attempting to find him in the underbrush but this little frog is a cagey fellow and outwitted the dog with OCD tendencies.

The weeks heralding summer's arrival are mild and moist, helping create lush splashes of color in the garden.

A story with a happy ending.

In the storage business the contents of a foreclosed unit are auctioned off when a tenant fails to pay rent. Occasionally a unit contains nothing of value as we experienced recently. This unit contained a partial pool table, an unusual buffet table with parts missing, a broken metal desk and this vintage 1903 upright piano painted green sans wheels.

The regal  piano with its ornate exterior and strong, melodious sound won my heart. If I did not already own a piano, it would be gracing my living room.

Not knowing the value (if any) of the piano, I contacted a piano technician who gave me a quick 2 minute appraisal. The first words out of his mouth were, "I don't even consider (buying) a piano that has been painted."  He ascertained that this piano had been worked on at one time and, with a good tune-up, still had some life left in it. He suggested I place an ad on Craigs list for $200 OBO. I did and but not receive even one inquiry.

Our good friend Phil offered to take it. I assumed that he would dismantle it, making a bit of cash off its scrap value.

But no, a man after my own heart who allows sentimentality to govern his actions, he left the piano in the back of his truck, parked in his driveway, with a large sign saying, "Free to a good home".

And this is where the story gets good.

A sheriff drove by, read the sign, and stopped to inquire about the particulars. He excitedly phoned his good friend who just so happens to be the music teacher at Rochester High School which just so happens to need a piano. Soon the music teacher arrived on scene and began playing the piano in the back of Phil's truck. Before long, Phil and the piano are heading to the high school followed by the sheriff and music teacher.

This lovely, 100 + year old  piano will continue sharing its lovely tones for years to come.

Lotto

While driving to Auburn last Saturday, I passed a Smart car on the freeway.

One can't help but notice a Smart car because of their wee size. This one was notable because the back end was covered with stickers. You know, the 'Where the heck is Wall Drug' type of bumper stickers.  And, a miniature Indian headdress was hanging from the rear view mirror.

You are probably wondering where I'm going with this.

Well, driving home from Auburn, nearly 5 hours later, I once again pass the same Smart car on the freeway with the same driver heading in my same direction toward Olympia!

I am not a mathematician and know nothing about probability theories and all that. But I wish did because what is the chance that 5 hours later, I should overtake the exact little car + driver for the second time?!

This strange synchronicity continued into the week....

All my plates were clean in the dishwasher, needing to be put away. As you can see by the picture, my plates consist of 2 each of 4 different colors. Without any thought on my part, look at the way the plates were stacked, colors matching.

Wake up, America!

A brother of one of my friends was missing from his home earlier this year. When he did not return from a walk, his wife became alarmed and alerted the police. Two days later, a search team found him in a wooded area not far from his home. He had committed suicide.

The family is still in shock. His suicide was totally and completely unexpected and uncharacteristic. His wife eventually began researching his medication(s). After heart surgery two years ago, his doctor put him on a medication for his heart condition. Immediately, he began having severe nightmares which kept him from sleeping. Digging, his wife found that a class action suit exists against the makers of this drug because of apparent suicides associated with taking it. Is this drug responsible for ______'s death?

Glynn and I often laugh about the side effects that are mentioned during a TV commercial spotlighting a particular pharmaceutical drug. "Let's see, I'll take this pill for my heartburn even though I may get cancer or have seizures or have a heart attack or uncontrollable diarrhea. My skin may peel or I could lose my vision. Then there's always the chance of an erection lasting longer than four hours....."

Obviously, there is a time and place for pharmaceutical drugs.  They do save and change lives!  (Without my daily thyroid hormone I would be unable to crawl out of bed each day.)

It's important, however, to do our due diligence prior to taking any medication (or supplement or herb, for that matter) so we know what to expect.

I was pleased to listen in on a conversation between four women over the age of 60 who were expressing their dismay (and condemnation) of two popular drugs taken to prevent bone loss.  They knew that these drugs cause brittle bones resulting in broken hips, femurs, even jaws. (Our bones are constantly in a state of flux - breaking down and building up. These drugs inhibit one of these functions.) Each woman stated she would never take Fosamax or Boniva. Instead, each chooses to exercise via resistance training to keep her bones healthy as she ages.

I'm encouraged that we Americans appear to be 'waking out of our slumber' to no longer blindly accept the advice of doctors who, once they leave medical school, receive much of their training via pharmaceutical reps or seminars and conventions that are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. We are demanding changes in our food supply - No more pink slime! - and exposing toxic practices involving antibiotic use in our livestock as well as chemicals dumped in our ground and sprayed on our plants.

May days

Jack Russell Terriers + chickens = disaster. Or so the experts say.  My girls and Otis have an understanding. Stay out of each others way. (She's not wounded, btw. She's sharing sun space with Otis.)

My flowering plum tree was especially stunning this year. The wisteria by my front porch bloomed in spite of the 'tough love' approach I practiced 6 weeks ago when I butched it - severely.

First rhubarb cutting of the season - enough for a couple of pies. Yum!

The girls are earning their keep.

Happy Mothers day to me. I spent the glorious, 80 degree day working in my flower beds after purchasing posies.

Early evening casting its soft light on my wisteria.
